Five Easy Steps to Get Financial Help for Your Startup

You have to put a lot into a startup company, not just hard work and dedication, but also some of your money. A good rule of thumb is to never invest more than you can afford to lose. That means you need to know how much you have, how much you can invest, and how much you need to raise. Without a solid understanding of your finances you’re not prepared to start a company, and you probably won’t attract too many investors or lenders. When  you need to borrow money, the people you know best are usually the first people you could contact. Your family and friends will likely be your biggest supporters and thus, most likely to loan you the funds you need to get started. However, sometimes issues that involve money can put a strain on relationships, so be sure you are careful to consider all of the factors and to get everything down in writing. When it comes time to ask for money – whether it’s from a family member, a close friend,or an outside investor – you need to be prepared. Your business

"Don't spend money you don't have" and "don't be afraid to be an asshole," architects advised

Getting paid on time, finding time to have children and dealing with long-hours culture were among topics discussed by executives from  BIG ,  Zaha Hadid Architects  and  Design Haus Liberty  at a business talk hosted by Dezeen in London last month. "Don't hand over your drawings if the client hasn't paid," was the first tip provided by BIG's chief executive Sheela Maini Søgaard, who revealed that she got her job 10 years ago by scrawling this and two other snippets of advice on a napkin during her first meeting with BIG founder  Bjarke Ingels . "Bjarke said he was having trouble with clients who weren't paying the bills," recalls Søgaard, who previously worked in the food industry, including a stint with celebrity Danish chef Claus Meyer. "So I just wrote three things down on a napkin," she added, saying she found time between child-nursing duties to meet Ingels in Copenhagen on the suggestion of a mutual friend. Two weeks later, Inge

Rob Price   Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan.AP Mark Zuckerberg's wildly ambitious plan to treat and cure all diseases has made a step forward with the announcement that it is funding dozens of scientists over the next five years. The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) is an organisation run by the Facebook cofounder and pediatrician Priscilla Chan, his wife.  Launched with a $3 billion (£2.4 billion) cheque book in September 2016 , its aim is to help "cure all disease" by the end of the twenty-first century, with a focus on investing in long-term scientific research that wouldn't necessarily pay off straight away. Google AdSense publishers get more control over the ads that can show on their sites

Whether to improve relevancy with their content or to keep competitors from advertising on their pages, publishers want control over the types of ads that can run on their sites. Google  announced  Tuesday that it is expanding the capability for publishers to opt out of certain ad categories and has increased the number of categories and subcategories from 250 to 470. More detailed subcategories give publishers greater refinement in blocking ads on their sites. For example, instead of blocking the category “Apparel,” you can now pick any of the new subcategories, “Sunglasses,” “Handbags” or “Watches.” The feature is now available in all AdSense markets and supports Chinese (simplified), Dutch, Polish, Russian and Turkish, in addition to English.

China world’s largest solar power producer

China has become the world’s biggest producer of solar energy by installing projects that are already generating 77.42 gigawatts of electricity. Reports say China has become the world’s biggest producer of solar energy by installing projects that are already generating 77.42 gigawatts of electricity per year.    A report by digitaltrends.com emphasized that China officially claimed the title after doubling its installed photovoltaic capacity last year. “By the end of 2016, China’s capacity hit 77.42 gigawatts, and while this is great in terms of raw numbers, it’s a lot less impressive relative to the country’s massive population,” the report added. Solar energy represents only one percent of the China’s energy output. However, speculations are rising that this may soon change as China devotes more and more of its attention towards clean energy. The country’s National Energy Administration (NEA) has already announced that plans are underway to add more than 110 gigawatts to the o

When should advertisers consider pausing Google Local Inventory Ads?

Retailers that sell online and in-store need to balance where to send users in their paid search efforts. Columnist Andy Taylor explores when advertisers might want to rely on local inventory versus regular product listing ads. Andy Taylor  on February 3, 2017 at 10:30 am In response to the growing popularity of searches with local intent, Google released  Local Inventory Ads  (LIA) a few years ago as a variation of  Product Listing Ads  (PLA) that include information on when a product is available at a nearby store location. Taking into account the local intent of each search query in determining when LIAs should be featured, Google can serve these units in a similar format to traditional PLAs, as well as in other LIA-specific formats, such as beneath a Google Maps display. These units are steadily becoming an important part of paid search campaigns for brands with brick-and-mortar locations, and LIA traffic increased 60 percent Y/Y in Q3 2016 for the median Merkle retailer. A man who took magic mushrooms for a scientific study said it helped him see a basic truth about relationships

1990 was a year of life and death for Clark Martin. His daughter was born, and he was diagnosed with cancer. Over the next 20 years, as his daughter took her first steps, experienced her first day of school, and eventually grew into a smart, fiercely independent teenager, doctors waged a blitzkrieg on Martin's body. Six surgeries. Two experimental treatments. Thousands of doctor visits. The cancer never went into remission, but Martin and his doctors managed to keep it in check by staying vigilant, always catching the disease just as it was on the brink of spreading. Still, the cancer took its toll. Martin was riddled with the effects of anxiety and depression. He had become so focused on saving his body from the cancer that he hadn't made time for the people and things in his life that really mattered. His relationships were in shambles; he and his daughter barely spoke. So in 2010, after reading an article in a magazine about a  medical trial that involved giving people

Coke's 'America the Beautiful' pre-game Super Bowl ad was just as divisive the last time it aired (KO)

Coca-Cola/YouTube Coca-Cola has shelled out for two ads during the Super Bowl this year, but the spot it aired in the pre-game commercial break is likely to be the one that will get most people talking. The soda company aired a re-run of the spot it ran during the 2014 Super Bowl. "It's Beautiful" sees a cast of diverse people singing "America The Beautiful," first in English, but also languages like Hindi, Arabic, and Tagalog. The ad is designed to portray the multi-cultural make-up of the US population. The ad, created by Wieden + Kennedy, took on a certain poignance this year, given the current political climate. Last time the spot aired, a bunch of people hated it , taking to social media to air their grievances against the brand — with some threatening to boycott the brand. "One simply does NOT sing America the Beautiful in ANY language but English! Get on board or OUT!" one Facebook user posted to Coca-Cola's page at the time, which had

Uber CEO quits Trump's business advisory group

Uber Technologies Inc Chief Executive Officer Travis Kalanick quit President Donald Trump's business advisory group on Thursday amid mounting pressure from activists and employees who oppose the administration's immigration policies. Critics included Uber drivers, many of whom are immigrants themselves. "Joining the group was not meant to be an endorsement of the president or his agenda but unfortunately it has been misinterpreted to be exactly that," Kalanick, who had planned to attend a meeting of the group on Friday, said in an email to staff that was seen by Reuters. Uber spokeswoman Chelsea Kohler later confirmed that he had left the group. Social media campaigns had targeted Uber, urging users to delete accounts and opt for rival Lyft Inc. Uber has been emailing users who deleted their accounts to say it shares their concerns and will compensate drivers affected by the ban. Kalanick said he spoke briefly to Trump about the immigration order "and its is
