The White House Office of the Press Secretary For Immediate Release February 16, 2017 East Room 12:55 P.M. EST THE PRESIDENT: Thank you very much. I just wanted to begin by mentioning that the nominee for Secretary of the Department of Labor will be Mr. Alex Acosta. He has a law degree from Harvard Law School, was a great student. Former clerk for Justice Samuel Alito. And he has had a tremendous career. He's a member, and has been a member, of the National Labor Relations Board, and has been through Senate confirmation three times, confirmed -- did very, very well. And so Alex, I've wished him the best. We just spoke. And he's going to be -- I think he'll be a tremendous Secretary of Labor. And also, as you probably heard just a little while ago, Mick Mulvaney, former congressman, has just been approved -- weeks late, I have to say that. Weeks, weeks late. Office of Management and Budget. And he will be, I think, a fantastic addition. Paul Singer has just left.

Trump to honor 'One China' policy in first phone call as president with China's Xi

Mark Wilson/Getty Images US President Donald Trump seems to have patched things up with China by promising to honor the "One China" agreement between the world's two biggest economies on his first phone call as president with Chinese President Xi Jinping. A press release from the White House said that during an "extremely cordial" conversation on Thursday evening, the "two leaders discussed numerous topics and President Trump agreed, at the request of President Xi, to honor our 'one China' policy." The release also said the two leaders extended invitations to meet in their respective countries, and that representatives of each country "will engage in discussions and negotiations on various issues of mutual interest." Trump rattled the Sino-US relationship after his inauguration by breaking with decades of US policy and  taking a call from Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-Wen  in December. The "One China" policy, which the

Trump Calls Hearing on Immigration Ban ‘Disgraceful’

WASHINGTON — President Trump on Wednesday lashed out at the judicial branch for considering challenges to his executive order banning travel from seven predominantly Muslim countries, asserting that politically motivated judges had held a “disgraceful” federal appeals court hearing Tuesday on the matter. “I don’t ever want to call a court biased, so I won’t call it biased,” Mr. Trump told a gathering of sheriffs and police chiefs in Washington. “But courts seem to be so political, and it would be so great for our justice system if they would be able to read a statement and do what’s right.” Mr. Trump, who opened his remarks reciting the passage of the United States code that gives the president the power to restrict immigration whenever he deems the influx of foreigners detrimental t

Israeli prime minister hopes to gather anti-Iran support in world tour

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on board an aircraft Israel’s hawkish prime minister has started out a string of significant overseas visits with the clearly-stated aim of magnetizing enmity towards Iran.  “We are at the start of a significant diplomatic period” for Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday before going on the tour,  The Guardian   reported. The visits will take him to the UK, the US and Australia. “In the diplomatic sphere, I intend to emphasize the need for a common front against Iran’s defiant aggression, which has raised its head in recent days. This must be done on an ongoing basis, but especially in light of Iran’s defiance against the international order,” he added. The premier has never ceased to stigmatize Iran throughout his career atop the Israeli political hierarchy, but he has been more signally leading the hostile policy since 2015, when the Islamic Republic and world powers, including the UK and the US, clinched a landmark nuclear accord

Sanders calls President Trump 'a fraud' over cabinet of billionaires

US Senator Bernie Sanders (Photo by AFP) Donald Trump is a “fraud,” says Senator Bernie Sanders, blasting the US president for breaking his campaign pledges by installing billionaires in his cabinet. Sanders, whose presidential bid revolved around fighting Wall Street and corporate interests, told CNN on Sunday that Trump was effectively “working for Wall Street.” “It is hard not to laugh to see President Trump alongside these Wall Street guys,” the Vermont senator said. “I don’t mean to be disrespectful. This guy is a fraud. This guy ran for president of the United States saying ‘I, Donald Trump, I’m going to take on Wall Street. These guys are getting away with murder.’ Then suddenly he appoints all these billionaires,” he added. Many of Trump’s cabinet picks are self-declared millionaires with proven ties to Wall Street. His designated Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, for example, is a former partner at Goldman Sachs. Gary Cohn, the president of the notorious financial fir

A famous Serbian inventor's 'impenetrable' border wall idea has a surprising connection to President Trump

Building an impenetrable wall along the US-Mexican border, ostensibly to keep out foreigners , is a key item on President Donald Trump's campaign-promise checklist. "I will build a great, great wall on our southern border, and I will  have Mexico pay  for that wall. Mark my words," Trump said during a campaign rally on June 16, 2015. The president moved toward fulfilling that promise on Wednesday, January 25, 2017, when he signed a  new executive order aimed at doing just that. The order tasks the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, a role currently filled by John Kelly, to "immediately plan, design, and construct a physical wall along the southern border, using appropriate materials and technology to most effectively achieve complete operational control[.]" If Secretary Kelly is seeking technological inspiration for the  design of Trump's wall , however, we hope he doesn't go rifling through the FBI's recently released dossier on
