Samsung chief remains prosecution target amid request for arrest warrant

(Photo by AFP) Samsung Group remains a target for prosecution as the office of South Korea's special prosecutor reiterates that it will seek a warrant for the arrest of the company's chief amid a probe into a corruption scandal that led to the impeachment of President Park Geun-hye. The office made the announcement in a statement released on Tuesday, a day after Lee Jae-yong, Samsung's vice chairman and the son of the group's boss, Lee Kun-hee, was questioned for more than 15 hours by the special prosecutor on Monday. The prosecutor is also seeking the arrest of Park Sang-jin, the company's executive, in the graft investigation. "We have filed for an arrest warrant for Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong and President Park Sang-jin today," the statement read....

US city evacuated amid threat of dam collapse

Thousands of people living below America’s tallest dam in northern California have been evacuated after the discovery of a "hazardous situation" that could cause the structure to fail. At least 160,000 people residing in Oroville and nearby cities were ordered to evacuated on Sunday night after water started to flow over the sides of an emergency spillway at the 230m-high Lake Oroville Dam. The spillway - used to alleviate pressure on the dam - is severely corroded and could fail imminently and unleash flood waters, according to Butte County Sheriff's Office. A large section of concrete at the bottom of the dam’s main spillway had already collapsed by Sunday, sending large chunks of concrete downstream. “Immediate evacuation from the low levels of Oroville and areas downstream is ordered,” said Sheriff Kory L. US tanks arrive in Latvia amid NATO expands towards Russia

(Photo by Reuters) The United States has deployed a number of tanks and other weaponry in the Baltic state of Latvia, part of the NATO military alliance's  expansion towards Russia’s border. Accompanied by the US Army's 3rd Brigade, 225 soldiers, 15 M1 Abrams tanks, six Bradley fighting vehicles and other military equipment arrived in Latvia’s northern municipality of Garkalne, Vidzeme, on Wednesday. The soldiers, who will be replacing those from 173rd Brigade, will operate in Latvia as part of NATO’s Atlantic Resolve operation, which is aimed at deterring what the US-led alliance calls “Russian aggression.” Earlier this week, over 50 units of US military equipment, including four battle tanks and 15 infantry fighting vehicles were deployed to Tapa, a city in northern Estonia, another Baltic st...
