The  Samsung Galaxy Note 8  has just been approved by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). This is one of the last stops on the road to release and it arrives only a few weeks before the phone’s official unveiling on August 23 in New York. The device bears model number SM-N950 (following SM-N930, 920, 910 and 900 for the Note 7, Note 5, Note 4 and Note 3 respectively), and the FCC filing listing indicates that it will support the GSM and CDMA networks for full compatibility with US carriers, as you might expect. Samsung is officially the world’s top chipmaker

Samsung has been  the world’s top smartphone vendor  for a few years now, and the most successful TV manufacturer since 2006, but the chaebol’s domination of the two very important and competitive markets is nothing compared to Intel’s supremacy in a similarly influential industry. Check that, semiconductors are even more crucial than phones for the evolution of the entire technology landscape, sitting at the core of computers and any “smart” device you can think of. Thus,  yesterday was a momentous day for Samsung  in more ways than one, with record-crushing overall profits  probably exceeding Apple’s latest quarterly gains  (to be confirmed next week), and sales figures in the semiconductor segment beating Intel’s total Q2 revenues. That’s right, Samsung made a staggering $7.2 billion profit between April and June 2017 on $15.8 billion earnings, consumer electronics (aka TVs and appliances) and mobile communications divisions not included. Meanwhile, the Santa Clara-based proce

Samsung Galaxy S8 costs more but should be less than last year’s S7

Aside from  stress tests ,  IFixit teardown , comparisons, and  reviews , we always look forward to that teardown by research firm IHS because it tells us how much the Samsung Galaxy S8 really costs. The phone starts at $720 for the 64GB models and can go high up to $850. This is really  more expensive than the S7  which started at $669 last year. The IHS Markit’s analysis of the Galaxy S8 has revealed the phone costs around  $301.60 . It goes up to 307.50 once the manufacturing costs are included–higher than the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. Inside the Galaxy S8, you will see a 10-nanometer (nm) system-on-chip, CAT-16 LTE modem, radio, Snapdragon 835 (US and China) or Exynos 8895 for the international version. According to IHS Markit, the CAT-16 LTE radio can handle three carriers up to 20 megahertz each. It can reach 1Gbps, making Gigabit LTE as the highest standard in 2017 flagship phone as per one analyst. It will still depend on the mobile carrier so hope and pray tell there’s no thro

Samsung said to be developing display wth four curved sides

The  Infinity Display  on the Galaxy S8 is impressive to say the least. Its sleek curves set it miles apart from the competition. According to a new report out of South Korea, Samsung is now working on a new kind of display panel which will have curves on all four sides, meaning that even the top and bottom edges would be curved. The report mentions that this display panel would allow for a screen-to-body ratio more than 98 percent so the front of the device will essentially be a big slab of glass. The handset would have no top or bottom bezels and would look unlike any other smartphone on the market right now. However, the report does caution that there are some difficulties in the lamination process that have to be eliminated first before we can see these displays in consumer devices. The current lamination process won’t allow the display’s four corners to register the user’s touch thus making them essentially useless. This challenge has to be addressed first before we can have sm

REASONS TO BUY THE SAMSUNG GALAXY A3 (2017)

The Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) is a great mid-range device. Samsung hasn’t managed to avoid all faults with this phone but it without a doubt includes a range of functions and features that definitely play in its favor. Here are 5 reasons to opt for the Galaxy A3 (2017). Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) review: the mid-range phone that thinks it's a flagship Has Samsung found the perfect recipe for success with the A series? Before revealing the strengths of this device, it’s important to acknowledge its weaknesses. This way you can ensure that, as a potential buyer, your final decision is based on all the facts from both sides of the coin. The phone was released with Android 6.0.1, an Android interface that has now been available for several months. Samsung didn’t consider it necessary to install Android Nougat on the device, which reflects the  fragmentation problem  that affects the various Android versions. Some also criticize the device’s poor internal memory (16 GB), as photography

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 scandal might have ruined one key iPhone 8 feature

There are plenty of things to get excited about when thinking of this year’s new iPhone 8, many of them never before seen on an Apple smartphone. The handset is expected to feature a brand new design with a display that occupies much more of the phone’s face — the home button is going away, and the bezels will be reduced significantly so that a bigger screen can be mounted inside a phone that’ll be about as big as the 4.7-inch iPhone 7. Rumors also indicate the phone might have curved edges, a fingerprint sensor embedded in the display, a stainless steel chassis sandwiched between glass panels, and a 3D facial recognition scanner. The battery, meanwhile, is expected to be bigger than before, and the iPhone 8 is tipped to feature wireless charging. But a new report suggests the Galaxy Note 7’s battery problems might prevent Apple from rolling out wireless charging this year. Don't Miss:   It’s not just Jet Black iPhone 7 models that are getting all scratched up Apple has been wor

Korean regulators looking into whether Google’s Android hurt Samsung’s Tizen

As the huge company that it is, Google tends to have a way of seeping into things through means you aren’t aware of. Yes, even into (or out of) Tizen OS. The  Korean Fair Trade Commission , though, is aware of a couple of stipulations between the firm and Samsung and is investigating some antitrust concerns it has. Specifically, it is looking into the Mobile Application Distribution Agreement and the anti-fragmentation agreement signed. The first agreement basically ensures that manufacturers  pre-load Google Mobile Services apps  like YouTube, Drive and Gmail onto their devices and also mandates  Google’s search engine as the default  — leaving competitors feeling edged out and regulators mad. Why? Unlike  minimum hardware requirements  that ensure an impressibly decent experience, dictating which web services a manufacturer’s phone must have as an irrevocable default allegedly deprives users of choice for such things — you can’t just Bing things from the intrinsic search bar on t

We know that the tablet market

"ever switched platforms and why?

When you are a fanatic in this industry, it’s important to keep an open mind. Sure, you’re allowed to have your favorites, but knowing how your competition works is just as important as knowing how your own platform works. In 2015, I had the unique pleasure of using each of four different operating systems as my daily driver for at least a month. Most of my phone carrying time was on Android, with quite a bit on iOS as well. Windows Phone and BlackBerry both crept in for about a month each as well. In some ways, this was the epitome of my career in mobile. Sad, I know. But ever since I joined the Pocketnow team, I’ve been mind hungry enough to want to know everything about everything in mobile. In my experience, the only way to really know a platform is to walk a mile in its shoes. This is why I make it a point to move away from time to time. I need to broaden my horizons and stay fresh with each platform. The best of both worlds Fortunately, in this day and age, it’s really simpl

Samsung Galaxy S8’s launch date to be revealed at MWC 2017

Samsung is definitely not launching the Galaxy S8 but it will reveal the launch date of the new premium flagship smartphone during the Mobile World Congress. Samsung will have a special event on February 27 and by then we’ll know when the Galaxy S8 will be announced. The South Korean tech giant usually introduces its newest Galaxy S phone at the MWC each year but this year is different as the S8 will be delayed. Samsung is believed to be holding an Unpacked event this March in New York. We’re guessing it will be late March because that’s what we’ve been saying the past few weeks–late March or early April launch. As for the exact date, reporters in Korea will know earlier when the Galaxy S8 will be announced according to Koh Dong-jin, President of Samsung’s mobile business. This year will be a bit different but we’re expecting that Samsung has finally and properly addressed the battery issue. Hopefully, the  Quality Assurance tests ,  protocols, and safety measures , the next flagship

Samsung chief remains prosecution target amid request for arrest warrant

(Photo by AFP) Samsung Group remains a target for prosecution as the office of South Korea's special prosecutor reiterates that it will seek a warrant for the arrest of the company's chief amid a probe into a corruption scandal that led to the impeachment of President Park Geun-hye. The office made the announcement in a statement released on Tuesday, a day after Lee Jae-yong, Samsung's vice chairman and the son of the group's boss, Lee Kun-hee, was questioned for more than 15 hours by the special prosecutor on Monday. The prosecutor is also seeking the arrest of Park Sang-jin, the company's executive, in the graft investigation. Leaked photos show just how sexy Samsung's Galaxy S8 could look

Samsung's upcoming  Galaxy S8  is  shaping up to be  one helluva flagship Android smartphone.  Though we already  got a glimpse  of what the S8 will supposedly look like last month, newly leaked photos give us a closer look at the front glass panels -- and depending on your taste, it's either going to be the hottest phone ever created or the ugliest. SEE ALSO:  Everything we think we know about the Samsung Galaxy S8 According Twitter user  Benjamin Geskin  (via  BGR ), the images below, posted to China's Weibo, are the front panels of the S8: The leaked images align with previous leaks and rumors that claim the S8 will lose the home button below the display to make way for curved, much larger pressure-sensitive screens (similar to the kind on the iPhone 6S and 7) in two sizes.  The smaller S8 will reportedly have a 5.8-inch screen and the larger "S8 Plus" a 6.2-inch display -- both would be larger than the existing S7 and S7 Edge, which have 5.1- and 5.5-inc

Samsung Galaxy A5 + A3 launch in the UK: Flagship features come to an affordable price point

Glass construction, water resistance, and latest Samsung UI arrive in new 4.7 and 5.2-inch handsets. Samsung has unleashed the latest devices in its mid-priced A series on the UK, with the arrival of the 2017 variants of the Galaxy A3 and A5. As in previous years, Samsung has brought a smattering of high-end features to a more affordable price point through the pint-sized 4.7-inch A3, and the larger 5.2-inch A5. Both phones share a similar glass and metal construction, much like Samsung's higher-end offerings, along with the IP68-rated water and dust resistance that comes as standard with the Galaxy S7. In fact, aside from a few differences in port and button placement, the A5 is the spitting image of its more expensive sibling. (In fact, it one-ups the GS7 in one small but notable area, shipping with a more up-to-date USB-C port.) So the external hardware matches the quality we've come to expect from Samsung's flagships, with a subtle curve to the back panel, and clean
